Pete Seeger and the Hudson River

Tune:  “Foggy River” by Fred Rose

Pete Seeger loved the Hudson River.  That was where he liked to be.

He built a cabin on the Hudson River where he raised his family,

Cleared the land and raised the roof and walls, built it up with care and pride,

And he lived there on the Hudson River right up to the day he died.

But one thing about the Hudson River brought him sorrow and distress,

For the waters of the Hudson River had become a filthy mess.

So Pete resolved that he would do his part to cure the damage done by men,

So that one day soon the Hudson River would flow clear and clean again.

In the old days on the Hudson River, wooden ships sailed to the sea.

One day while sailing on the Hudson River, Pete conceived a new idea--

Build a sloop and name it Clearwater, involve the whole community,

To bring the troubles of the Hudson River much-deserved publicity.

Sailing up and down the Hudson River, folks would celebrate and sing.

Soon this meeting on the Hudson River became an annual gathering,

Educating people everywhere how to do things differently,

So the waters of the Hudson River could be restored to purity.

Now years later on the Hudson River, folks still gather every year.

Thanks to Pete today the Hudson River once again runs clean and clear.

So let’s thank him for the work he did, for his courage and his grace.

What he did to heal the Hudson River made New York a better place,

As all the work he did throughout his lifetime made the world a better place.
