We Must Remember Them
It took a whole lot of struggle to get us where we are today.
It took a whole lot of battles, people fightin’ for a better way.
It took a whole lot of hard work from a whole lot of hard-workin’ women and men.
And we’ve got to find a way to remember them.
It took a whole lot of courage. It took a lot of courage and bravery.
It took a lot of sacrifice, and a whole lot of heartache and tragedy.
It took ordinary folks like you and me puttin’ their lives in jeopardy,
And we’ve got to find a way to remember them.
At Lawrence, Mass and in Paterson,
In Centralia and Everett, Washington.
At Haymarket Square and Republic Steel and in Kentucky’s coal fields.
CHORUS: And we must remember them, and retrieve our history
We must remember them, and preserve their legacy.
Keep the memory alive of the ones who fought and died,
And remember them with pride, we must remember them.
It took a whole lot of vision. It took a lot of heart and guts and soul.
It took a whole lot of passion and a lot of dedication to the goal.
It took workers’ blood and sweat and tears goin’ back two hundred years.
And we’ve got to find a way to remember them.
On the Lower East Side in nineteen-nine, in Butte, Montana in the copper mines,
Out in San Francisco in ’34, and oh so many more. CHORUS
We’re standing on the shoulders of those who came before us.
The echoes of their voices sing with us every chorus.
It’s gonna take a lot of struggle to get us where we need to go.
It’s gonna take a lot of courage and a whole lot of vision and heart and soul,
But we can draw inspiration from the many people that have gone before,
If we only find a way to remember them.
The sit-down strikers at the GM plants, at J.P. Stevens and at Farah Pants--
Overwhelming odds they overcame, and we can do the same,
But we must remember them…CHORUS
Keep the memory alive of the ones who fought and died
And remember them with pride, we must remember them.
